The Marcie Mazzola Memorial Run/Walk was a tremendous success with over 400 participants! Proceeds help establish scholarships to send underprivileged children to Summer Camp.
Thank you, to all of our race sponsors, participants, supporters, committee members and volunteers for making this event so special!
The day began at 8:00 am with a Kids Fun Run for children 12 years old and younger. The Fun Run, taking place on the grounds of the Huntington YMCA, is non-competitive and all participants received t-shirts, medals and huge dinosaur cookies for their efforts.
The 4-Mile Run/Walk began at 8:30 am. Sanctioned by the USATF (NY-07011JG), the run provides participants with very scenic views of Huntington, NY. Starting at the Huntington YMCA’s Main Entrance, the course with a challenging hill at the start of the run transcends through Huntington and shows off the beauty of Hecksher Park from all sides. T-shirts were given to all pre-registered participants.
The Marcie Mazzola Memorial Run/Walk attracted participants from Long Island and across the United States.
The mission of the Marcie Mazzola Foundation is to “help better the lives of abused and at-risk children; and to build community awareness regarding the needs of children” The proceeds from this event will provide scholarships for underprivileged children to attend the Huntington YMCA’s 2009 Summer Camp Program. Last year's event raised $15,000. The Foundation’s goal for 2009 is to double that amount so many more children can experience Summer Camp.
The Marcie Mazzola Memorial 4-Mile Run/Walk features chip timing so finishing times are recorded electronically. Each participant wears an ankle bracelet with a timing chip attached. As participants cross the finish line their times are automatically recorded and posted for all to see. Start 2 Finish is the official timing company for the race.
Awards are given to the overall male and female runners along with a one-year membership to the Huntington YMCA. The first three finishers in each age and gender category also receive awards.
As soon as results are received they will be posted on the Marcie Mazzola Foundation website, www.marciemazzolafoundation.org and www.start2finish.com. Greater Long Island Running Club “Footnotes Magazine” will publish the complete results in its May 2009 Issue.
